Q: May I use Gilbert Williams' art on my
website?
A: If your site is a noncommercial free site
you may. Please be so kind as to give a credit, and a link to this web
address.
Q: May I use Gilbert Williams' art for my
personal project or business?
A: You must get permission first to use his
art for anything that is to be published as printed material. A price for
commercial use may be negotiated if the project does not conflict with
previous commitments.
Q: What medium are the paintings done
in?
A: Most of my paintings are acrylic. I
sometimes use oil as well when the mood strikes me. Acrylic allows me to paint
in many layers that build the composition as I work. Oil is good for subtle
control of color and texture.
Q: What is your working method?
A: I generally start with an almost abstract
wash of color. I prefer to "discover" the painting as I work, rather than making
lots of sketches and preplanning. It's similar to automatic writing, where the
images arise from the imagination and subconscious like a dream. The
painting becomes clearer and more focused as I work.
Q: What other artists influenced
you?
A: I have studied art all my life, but the
artists who caught my imagination the most have always had a visionary aspect to
their work. Artists like Hieronymus Bosch, William Blake, and Albrecht Durer.
Were early influences. I am also very fond of the Victorian fantasy
illustrators, the French and English symbolists and the
Pre-Raphaelites.
Q: Is your art part of an art movement? What
is visionary art?
A: I don't consider my art to be anything
other than personal, but I have published and shown with artists of a kindred
spirit. We first used the term visionary art in the late 60s and early 70s to
denote a psychedelic west coast fantasy art movement. It has become generally
applied to many kinds of outsider art now. usually with a spiritual folk art
quality... To me it refers to the metaphysical art that arises from the
collective unconscious.
